Diaper Bag Essentials

There’s almost nothing worse than a blowout in public and not having any extra diapers, wipes, or clothes on hand. I learned very quickly with my baby to have a well-stocked diaper bag. Here’s what I keep in mine:

*Disclaimer-This post may contain affiliate links, but every link leads you to products that I have used and love! Read the full disclosure here. *

For Infants:
• 5-10 diapers – If you are cloth diapering then make sure to include a wet/dry bag. Also make sure to switch them out when your baby goes up a size.
• Package of wipes – Wipes are great for diaper changes and cleaning up any other messes.
• Extra set of clothes- Make sure to switch out sizes as your baby grows!
• Grocery Bags- for those dirty clothes
Dog Waste Bags – for those super stinky diapers! I prefer to use the dog waste bags because I can buy them in bulk for a cheaper price then the ones designed for diapers, and they do the same thing!
• Feeding accessories- If you are bottle feeding then have some extra formula and a bottle. I like to use the liquid Ready to Use or the individual packets for on the go. If you are breastfeeding then add lanolin and a cover.
• Burp Cloths- I had 2 extra and it was worth it when spit up happened!
Mittens – For those tiny fingernails that scratch so easily.

For Toddlers:
Toddlers require everything that the Infant has, plus a few things.
• Snacks- Puffs are a great option.
• Toys- Toddlers get bored so easily! Having a couple toys or books on hand can be a life saver.
• Sunscreen- I bought this California Baby Eco Traveler Kit and it has the perfect sized lotion and sunscreen in it for a diaper bag.
• Anti-bacterial wipesAntibacterial Wipes – I use them to wipe down grocery carts before I put my baby in it. I like the small packets because they fit better in the diaper bag for travel.
• Teether- Must have for teething baby!
For Mom:
• Lotion
• Hand Sanitizer – I like this one because it can easily hook to the outside of the diaper bag so I don’t have to dig around for it.
• Pen
• Hard Candy/Gum
• Chapstick
• Wallet
• Tide-to-go pen
• Tissues

It seems like a lot, but I invested in this diaper bag and it’s AMAZING. It has many easy -to -get-to pockets, it has clips so it can be hooked to a stroller or shopping cart, it has a ring on the outside to hook keys or hand sanitizer, it’s gender neutral so it works with any gender of baby and my husband is comfortable hauling it around…and so much more! I seriously could go on forever about how amazing it is!
Now you’re ready to tackle the outside world with a baby. Good luck!

Most stores here have wipes for the carts. I’d be so grossed out otherwise.

Thanks for sharing your awesome list. This is really helpful on what to put in our diaper bag. Yes I agree to add sanitizer or alcohol.

I bought my bestfriend a diaper bag last week, with Hello Kitty design. Ah she loves it. Which makes me think if she will use it as diaper bag or maybe not.

It’s really important to have everything you need. I remember bringing extras of everything whenever we go out with the twins when they were little. This is a good guide for new parents.

I used to have 2-3 extra nappies, 2 sets of clothes, 3 feeding bottles, 1 formula dispenser, big pack of wipes, grocery bags for dirty nappies, 2-3 burp cloths. And that was only for half a day or less outing. Nowadays, my son has his own backpack which contains 1-2 nappies, 2 hand towels, a small pack of wipes.

It’s such a good idea for the child to have a backpack of their things when they are older!

This reminds me of all the things I needed to have in a bag when my daughter was a little girl. It doesn’t seem that long ago but she’s eleven now so it feels kind of crazy.

I like how you split the diaper bags into age groups! I agree that sunscreen and wipes are so important x

This is such a detailed list! I have a ten month old so I know the struggle of making the perfect bag. Mine doesn’t have wipes since I don’t use them but does have toilet paper, cotton and water as a substitute

I am so glad I don’t have to lug around all this stuff any more now that all my children are older, lol! I never did have a diaper bag, I just stuck everything underneath the buggy, but I wish I’d had such a nice bag as yours! Would have made life a lot easier!

After working in childcare for years, a well stocked bag is so much more important than you’d think. Chances are that if you needed something, you didn’t have it. This is a great list!

I so agree with this. I remember carrying a diaper bag everywhere. Once I left it and that was a disaster.

The only thing I would add is cash. Sometimes I found myself in situations where I needed actual cash and almost never had it LOL.

Good list. I also like to have an extra set of clothes, diapers, and a grocery sack in the car but I had a blowout king and even with 2 extra outfits in my bag I need to use the one in the car a time or 2. The extra diapers in the car has been a life saver too.
