8 Reasons Why Drive-In Theaters Are Better: Especially With Kids

When I was in elementary school my dad came home and told us that he got a job at a theater so we were going to get to watch free movies. I was so excited!! Then he told us that it was a drive-in theater where you sit in your car to watch the movie….and I cried.
Over the years though, my family ended up running the theater and it became like a second home to me. If you’ve never before heard of a drive-in theater then it’s where you sit in your car, tune your radio to a certain station to hear the movie, then watch the movie on a big screen at the front of the car lot once the sun goes down. There are so many benefits to a drive-in theater over a regular one! Here are my top 8 reasons why a drive-in is better:

1. You can go in your pjs!
If you have no plans to get out of the vehicle then you can go in your pajamas and be comfortable throughout the show. I also like to take a large blanket.
2. 2 movies for the price of 1
Every drive-in theater that I’ve been to shows 2 movies, one after the other with a short “intermission” break in-between. You either pay around $7 per person for both movies, or a certain amount per vehicle. $7 for TWO movies? I’ll take it!
3. The Food
Only at a drive-in theater can you get a grilled hamburger, hot dog, or sausage. I grew up working at the Terrace Drive-In in Idaho, but the one that we went to last weekend was the Raleigh Outdoor Theater in North Carolina. They also have French fries, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings besides the normal candy/pop/popcorn that theaters have. The food is usually cheaper than normal theaters too. This is a picture of me at the drive- in last weekend with a large tub of popcorn that was only $5!

4. You can watch the movie multiple different ways
Last weekend, as you can see in the pic above, my husband and I decided to park our SUV backwards and open the hatch to watch the movie from our spacious trunk. Large trunks and truck beds are great for piling in the blankets and watching the show in comfort! If you prefer to be outside then you can also set up a lawn chair or blanket and watch the movie under the stars.

Drive-in Theaters are better for kids because:

5. You can control the volume
My son doesn’t like super loud noises, but with the car I can control the volume of the movies. Since customers watch the movie from their vehicle, the volume level is perfectly matched to each viewer!
6. Your crazy loud kids won’t bug others
When my son gets excited he screams high-pitched squeals of joy. He’s only 10 months old too, so he still cries when he’s hungry and tired. We like drive-in theaters because if he decides to screech or cry then we just roll up the car windows and won’t bug anyone else enjoying the show.
7. You can watch a movie after they’re asleep
Most drive-in theaters have the G, PG, and PG-13 rated movies playing first. We don’t watch rated-R movies, but those play second so the adults can watch them after the kids are fast asleep.
8. You don’t have to pay a babysitter
We move a lot so sometimes it’s hard to find people that we trust to watch our baby. We love going on dates though, and the drive-in provides us an opportunity to still be on a “date”. The first movie starts when the sun goes down, so depending on where you live the second movie would start around 11-midnight. Once our son is asleep for the second movie we can start our date and enjoy the quiet time we have together…without having to pay a babysitter.
I may be a little biased because I practically grew up at a drive-in theater, but they are hands-down the best theaters! Unfortunately they are dying out, so if you have one close to you then be sure to support them and go see your movies there! The only downside to them is when it rains the movie can be hard to see, so be sure to check the weather before you go!

When I was little my mom or grandmother would take us to the drive-in. It was so much fun, I want to take our kids soon!

I have not been to a drive in move in years. I don’t think they have them here anymore.

I love drive-in theaters! It’s always so fun to watch movies with either your husband or the whole family. It’s also a lovely way to spend time with them.

Ha! I didn’t think about movie two being for after the kids are asleep. Mine would probably stay awake just to try and see the R movie, so we’d catch the one show only, which would be ok. 🙂

This reminds me of being a kid. We used to go to the drive-in every weekend. Such great memories of friends in the back of a pickup truck sitting under the stars. There’s truly nothing like it x

I love drive-in theaters, it is an open space and no one is annoying you with his comments about the movie, you can always change your place and even walk when you feel like it.

Yes! I love that you can be at a theater watching a new film and still have your privacy to enjoy it however you like.

We go to the drive in every summer. It’s one of those things that it wouldn’t be summer without for us.
